The rich colour makes this side plate a stylish partner to bread, butter or more spectacular starters.

Handmade in Oaxaca, a state rich in pre-hispanic pottery tradition, the Barro Negro (black clay) style has a tactile finish with a subtle shine. The workshop takes the natural clay and cleans it by filtering it for 20 days. The clay is then smoked to create the black colour and burnished rather than glazed, by polishing the surface with a quartz crystal until it has a glossy finish with a warm glow. The pieces are then fired in underground pits or kilns, using a wood fire.

  • The Loving collection*

Wild clay from the mountains of Oaxaca becomes a polished matt piece for the contemporary home.

The clay has been collected by hand using rustic tools from the region of Oaxaca. It is then filtered for 30 days to create a very soft and clean clay. It is known as wild clay because it has not been mixed with any artificial powders or colours.

The Loving collection pieces are fired with firewood in a brick pit, without use of oil, gas or electricity. The black colour of the pieces is natural and it is given by a technique of oxygen reduction from blocking the exit of the smoke during the fire by covering the oven from the outside with clay and mud. For the pale collection, the oven is not fully enclosed during firing so the smoke goes out easily and the terracotta colour is the naked form of the clay.

Before the fire the pieces are burnished, an ancient technique of polishing the pieces with a hard stone or a metallic soft tool. This process closes the pores of the clay making it watertight and creates a unique shine and soft texture without any glaze added.

Every production batch is small, unique through the combination of materials, fire and weather conditions.

The beauty of these pieces is in the way of production and there is not perfection in the exact same shape or colour. Even the way they age is equivalent to a wooden chopping board or a cotton blanket getting softer.

The pieces can present spots of different colours apart from the black or terracotta, these marks or spots are the result of the contact in the oven with other pieces or fire flames in contact, creating a unique pattern as a memory of the fire.

  • This plate is burnished to create a beautiful shine and waterproof, food safe finish.

We recommend hand wash with hot water soap and a sponge to keep the beautiful shine and soft texture for a longer time.

    Dishwasher safe.

You can be confident using forks and spoons but be careful with sharp knives as they can scratch the piece.

When you first receive the pieces, wash them with tap-hot water. With the cups, keep the water in them for a few minutes.

Due to the item's individual production, there may be small variations from piece to piece.

    IMPORTANT

It should be noted that with use the pieces will become permanently stained if any foods with oil or colour are put on them.

We consider this change part of the unique magic of the natural background of its production, this characteristic is what makes that world known restaurants use them in their menu as you can not get this effect with any other industrial type of production.
