The Bees and the Stone collection*

A fable of the everyday

The idea of this collection was to create companions of the everyday.

A set of tableware to treasure through daily use.

Clean, easy lines as a subtle backdrop to evening meals and morning coffees. The clay comes from the earth and is worked using only natural materials.

This tableware is made in the town of Reyes, Puebla, by a small community, where artisans take the clay from the mountains around the town using traditional tools. The pieces are burnished - an ancient technique that involves polishing the pieces with a hard stone or a metallic soft tool. This process closes the pores of the clay making it watertight, and creates a unique shine and soft texture without any glaze. Then the pieces are fired with wood in a brick oven at 1100 degrees, without the use of oil, gas or electricity. This makes them harder and resistant to high temperatures in the kitchen. Finally the artisans shower the pieces with artesanal liquid beeswax, which adds a second watertight protection and gives a beautiful shine.

The colour of each piece (black, red and beige) is natural, coming from the oven process as well as the mixture with other stones from the Mixteca region.

  • To create a vibrant colour and shine the pieces are then showered in liquid beeswax, creating a very thin cover that penetrates the first layers of the clay, to add an extra watertight layer.

The colours are given by techniques without the use of artificial colourant

  • This is a natural clay, which is a very good thermal insulator. It does not get hot with boiling water, so it will protect your fingers when your coffee is very hot.

Even though our pieces can resist high temperatures we recommend not to put them in direct contact with fire or for long time in the oven.

The special finish with beeswax is resistant enough for food but you should avoid to use aggressive soaps.

Using dishwasher is ok but a soft and natural soap and a sponge is enough to clean them and preserve the beautiful shine for a very long time.

You can be confident in the using forks, spoons and table knives with these products.

It should be noted that with use they will become permanently stained if any foods with oil or color are put on them which is part of the unique magic of the natural background of its production, this characteristic is what makes that world known restaurants use them in their menu as you can not get this effect with any other industrial type of production.
